From Administrative Support to VIP Services, the 2012 Arctic Winter Games have a wide variety of volunteer positions that are sure to suit your interests. From physicians to Russian translators or mascots we need volunteers with all types of skill sets and there is a position to suit any potential volunteer.
Below is a complete listing of the volunteer positions that are available for the 2012 Arctic Winter Games.
Administration and Finance
Administrative Support
Venue Associate - This role will provide logistical and finance related support to the administration and finance venue team representative.
Venue Administrator - This role will provide administrative support and services for each venue operations office. This role will be responsible for reception, file management, customer service and ensuring the smooth operation for each venue operations office.
Athlete Services
Athletes Village Operations
Entertainment Assistant - This role will help execute evening entertainment events for the athlete's village during the Games. This may involve helping with set up, tear down, crowd control and similar tasks.
Equipment Clerk - This role will oversee the equipment storage area, ensuring that teams can find their designated equipment lockups and assisting with equipment if required. The clerk will also ensure the smooth and secure flow of persons entering the storage area by checking team accreditation for persons entering equipment storage and repair area.
Hall Monitor - This role will check athlete accreditation to ensure that only athletes are in the designated areas, and will answer questions about accommodations.
Participant Lounge Host - This role provides hospitality/supervision services to participants and ensures the lounge is adequately supplied, kept clean and organized.
Village Runner - This role provides a courier-like service by foot to ensure the movement of papers, small items and minor equipment throughout the athletes villages. This role responds to requests for courier service to/from various groups and will interact with a wide variety of stakeholders.
Village Information Centre - This role responds to questions for athletes, coaches, mission staff and volunteers at the information desk in the athletes centre and in the operations centre.
Food Services
Busser - This role provides services in the cafeteria to ensure that the dining area is kept clean. This will include removing plates and waste to the appropriate area, cleaning and sanitizing the tables, and ensuring that the dining area is ready for diners.
Delivery Clerk - This role will assist in the acceptance and putting away of bulk food orders and assist Logistics in the loading and unloading of food on the delivery trucks (i.e. hot meal service).
Door Monitor - This role will; check accreditation in order to grant access to the diners; monitor the number of people in the dining area to ensure the capacity of the dining area is not over occupancy regulations; make sure that food does not leave the dining hall. If there is a wait to get into the dining area, the Door Monitor will have to maintain a line up at the entrance and let diners in as space becomes available.
Stocker - This role will restock cutlery, condiments, dishes and napkins in the cafeteria to ensure that the diners have access to these items when they need them. They will also ensure that the dining area is organized and ready for diners.
Community Relations
Community Integration
Community Integration - This role is responsible for increasing awareness of the Games in rural Yukon communities.
Language Services
Language Services - This role is responsible for providing language translation services where and when necessary. the most common requirements are for Russian, Greenlandic and Danish translators.
Welcome and Send-off
Welcome and Send-off - This role is responsible for the welcome and send off of all Games participants, special guests and, wherever possible, visitors to the Games. This first impression a new visitor has to a community will often be the most important and it can have a major impact on their experience and potential future tourism opportunities for the host community.
Culture and Ceremonies
Medal Presentation
Flag Bearer - This role parades into the venue for the medal ceremony, carrying the national flags of the medal winners.
Medal Assistant - This role organizes the Athletes, Flag and Medal Bearers for medal presentations. They will ensure that the podium is in place and national anthem is cued to play.
Medal Bearer - This role will parade into the venue with a tray holding the medals, for presentation to the winners of the competition.
Production Team
Artist Representative - This role will respond to artist needs, ensure their safety and comfort, and ensures that the Green Room is set up with water and snacks for artists.
Loader - This role will work in conjunction with the Technical Director and Stage Crew to help the production company with load in/out of production, backline and artist gear.
Marshal - This role makes sure that the athletes, performers, and special guests at opening and closing ceremonies are in place and ready to go when they are needed. Acting as a supervisor and/or chaperone for the athletes, performers and special guests, the Marshal will prepare personnel for entrance, performance and exits; ensure that required materials are available at entrances for each ceremony and ensure exits are functional.
Production Assistant - This role will assist with stage set up and preparations, managing performers backstage, in the greenroom and oversee overall stage operations.
Stage Attendant - This role is positioned in the performance area of the opening and closing ceremonies to monitor the area, switch out stage equipment and props, and direct traffic flow.
Information Technology
IT Services
Help Desk Specialist - This role provides basic support for technology used during the Games such as computers, radios and cell phones. Problem diagnosis and resolution is provided mainly over the phone for IT staff in the field or directly with volunteers and Games staff.
Support Specialist - This role provides in-depth support for one technical area during the Games time. The support specialist provides assistance to the help desk staff as needed. The specialist co-ordinates recovery of services with vendors or others as needed. Areas of specialty support needed includes radios, network, hardware (computers, printers) and phones.
Technology Centre - This role assists with the set-up, distribution and collection of IT equipment needs for the Games. Prior to Games time, computers, radios and cell phones need to be configured, tested and distributed. During Games time, failed or damaged equipment needs to be replaced or repaired and redeployed. Following the Games, equipment needs to be collected, boxed and stored.
IT Venue Operations
Audio Support - This role provides first level technical support at each venue regarding audio equipment and sound. They will assist Games staff and volunteers with audio-related issues and coordinates with the IT Help Desk as needed.
Results Technician - This role provides support transferring sport results to the Canada Games web-site for verification and publishing. Technicians will be on-site at the sport events and at the main results centre.
IT Support - This role will provide first level support for IT issues at a specified sport or non-sport venue.They will use their familiarity of cell phones, radios, computers and printers to diagnose and assist other Games staff and volunteers with any information technology related issues. If required the representative can call upon second level IT support available form the IT help desk.
Logistics
Airport Operations
Baggage & Airport Clerk - This role is responsible for sorting and distributing baggage and equipment for athlete arrivals and departures. They will work with the airport, airlines and cartage companies, in regards to loading and unloading baggage and equipment
Motor Pool Driver
Motor Pool Driver - This role operates the Motor Pool fleet of vehicles, supplies, people and materials transportation to designated Games locations.
Security
Access Control - This role manages the movement of people and assets at the venues using the accreditation system. This role also helps rectify safety concerns and prevents the introduction of prohibited items into the venues.
Transportation Operations
Dispatch - This role is responsible for providing reception and administrative support to the transportation operations. this may include answering phones, directing incoming busing related calls, coordinating services requests as well as routine administrative tasks.
Load Zone Marshal - This role provides transportation related information to Games participants, and acts as a liaison between Games participants and the transportation operations coordinator. In a non driving capacity, loan zone marshals assist in the busing of athletes and coached when they arrive and upon departure at the end of the Games.
Parking Attendants - This role provides access control to parking areas, and ensures vehicles entering the venue have appropriate accreditation and/or permits. They will communicate to the public alternate parking venues.
Marketing
Mascot Program
Mascot Driver - This role is responsible for transporting the volunteer mascot operator and handler to designated sites.
Mascot Handler - The role travels with the mascots keeping them safe from harm and makes sure that they have necessary supplies (i.e. water). The mascot handler and the mascot operators will attend many different events pre-games and throughout the week of the Games.
Mascot Operator - This role will wear the mascot costumes and visit the different tournaments, venues and festivals leading up to and including the Games. Their primary role will be to generate enthusiasm with the athletes, fans and volunteers. They will be accompanies by a handler.
Media Relations and Hosting
Administration Clerk - This role is responsible for administrative tasks at the Media Centre including photocopying, printing and answering phones. They also help ensure adequate care and comfort for members of the media and media centre volunteers.
Media Centre Runner - This role provides a courier-like service to ensure the movement of papers, small items and minor equipment between the Media Centre and other venues. This role responds to requests for courier services to/from venues and will interact with various media volunteers and staff.
Media Venue Volunteers - This role helps implement the daily operations of their assigned venue, including the media rooms, mixed media zones, photography zones, and mascot areas. This role assists with scheduling mascot appearances and the distribution of publications.
Media Services
Games Photographer - This role takes photographs at both sport and non sport events at various venues.
Website/Social Marketing - This role will be responsible for updating the various social media sites to tell the stories of the Games.
Medical Services
Athletic Therapist
Athletic Therapist - This role responds to field of play injuries at all sport venues, providing on-field and sideline care of participants. The Athletic Therapist will also assess and treat injuries in the polyclinic, and provide prophylactic and reinforcement taping when clinically indicated. They also ensure that therapy bags are stocked and therapy equipment/modalities are in working order
Massage Therapist
Massage Therapist - This role will provide soft tissue therapy and massage therapy in pre-event and post-event situations. The will assist in athlete cool-down and flexibility protocol, and in the healing process of muscular-skeletal injuries. They will ensure that required supplies are stocked.
Nurse
Nurse - This role will provide appropriate care for all participants, responding to any medical incidents and providing care in accordance with Scope of Practice. Nurses will assist with participant intake at the Poly Clinic. They are also responsible for operations within the polyclinic, ensuring that medical supplies are stocked.
Physician
Physician - This role will be responsible for the overall heath, care and well-being of all participants. Duties will include responding to field of play injuries, assessment and treatment of injuries and illness, referral for additional treatment/care, and prescription of medication. The Physicians hold the responsibility to withdraw and reinstate participants from competition. They also provide counselling regarding medications and psychological issues. Physicians will aid in ensuring medical supplies are stocked and diagnostic equipment is in working order.
Physiotherapist
Physiotherapist - This role will respond to field of play injuries at sport venues, providing on-field and sideline care of participants. They will also assess and treat injuries in clinic, providing prophylactic and reinforcement taping when clinically indicated. They ensure that therapy bags are stocked and therapy equipment/modalities are in working order.
Ski Patroller
Ski Patroller - This role will be the first responder for biathlon, skiing and snowboarding events. They will work within the Canadian Ski Patrol System guidelines to provide medical first responder care on the hill and if necessary at the venue site. The Ski Patrol team will work with, and assist the venue medical team in providing care and treatment for all participants. They ensure medical supplies are stocked and rescue equipment is in good working order.
Medical Support Services
Medical Administration - This role is responsible for office administration at the polyclinic. This may include inquiries at the reception.admitting desk, ensuring intake forms of the athletes are completed, being familiar with medical software to access participant information and enter medical injury reports, organizing paperwork, filing, responding to phone inquiries and referring inquiries to appropriate individuals.
Medical Supplies - This role is responsible for assisting with the storage, organization and distribution of medical supplies. Responsibilities include setting up supply storage areas, maintaining accurate records of incoming and outgoing supplies, organizing requested outgoing supplies, and ensuring all supplies are accounted for and secure at all times.
Sponsorship
Sponsorship Services
Promotions Assistant - This role will assist sponsors in their activation program that happens at the venues. This may include on-ice promotion support, give-a-ways at entrances or other promotions for spectators.
VIP Services
Host/Hostess - This role is responsible for greeting VIP's, and ensures that the lounge is properly stocked and maintained, including food and drink. They will provide beverage service, local and tourist information, Games updates, and event schedules.
Welcome Centre Agent - This role welcomes VIP's to the Games, distributes VIP gift bags and registration packages, and acts as the hub of information and administrative support for VIP's (arranging transportation, printing itineraries, providing directions etc.) They will also provide information on local and tourist sites, as well as updated sport scores, medal counts and event schedules.
Sport
Mission Services
Administrative Support - This role is responsible for providing office support for the Mission Team. Duties will include photocopying, filing, answering the phone, typing etc.
Sport Results
Sport Results Technician - This role provides support verifying sport results to the Canada Games web-site for publishing.
Sport Services
Equipment Set-up Assistant - This role will assist the sport organizing committee with field of play fit out before the start of the competition.
Venues
Spectator Services
Ticket Taker - This role is responsible for collecting spectator tickets and checking the accreditation of other visitors to the venue. They also count the number of spectators to ensure the capacity is not exceeded in a venue.
Usher - This role will assist spectators, VIP's and athletes to the appropriate seating area. They also ensure that the capacity is not exceeded in a venue.
Venue Fit Out
Fit Out Labourer - This role will assist with the set up and take down of equipment, furnishings, etc., at designated sport and non sport venues.
Green Team
Green Team - This role will be assigned to a specific sport or non-sport venue and will provide on-the ground service to ensure that waste is properly handled at the venue. They will interact with the venue staff, athletes, coaches and the public in educating them about proper waste management practices. They will also assist with maintaining, monitoring and reporting on green programs such as recycling, composting and waste diversion.
Volunteer Services
Accreditation Team
Accreditation Clerk - This role will process, produce and distribute accreditation badges to the Games family (VIP's, Volunteers, Athletes, Officials, Media, etc.) prior to, and during the Games. Responding to accreditation requests and questions, this role will interact with a wide variety of stakeholders.
Orientation Team
Facilitator/Trainer - The orientation facilitator will be part of a dedicated team, delivering corporate orientation sessions to all Games time volunteers. This role will also be responsible for set up and general clean up after the sessions, and will report any concerns or unanswered questions that arise to the orientation committee lead for follow up.
Recruitment Team
Recruitment Team - Recruitment team members are outgoing who will attend various community events around Whitehorse and surrounding areas to help spread the Games message and recruit volunteers.
Volunteer Care & Comfort
Care & Comfort Representative - The volunteer care and comfort representative will provide support to volunteers who can't make it to the volunteer lounge during their shift, and will ensure the movement of information, volunteer resources, and supplies throughout the venue related to volunteer services.
Sign-in & Information Representative - This role is responsible for checking volunteers in and out for their shift, as well as providing them with general information about the venue. This role will also be the point of contact for the venue team representative to check if all their volunteers have arrived for a shift.
Volunteer Centre Operations
Data Entry Clerk - This role will enter any paper-based application forms into the online system, and/or aid volunteers with the online application system in person at the volunteer centre.
Office Clerk - This role will provide administrative support to the staff and volunteers at the volunteer centre. Duties may included providing front-line reception services, responding to inquiries, greeting and welcoming in-person visitors, word processing (preparing letters, mails-outs, etc.), photocopying and document preparation, filing, and data entry. This role will interact with a wide variety of stakeholders.
